What qualifications do I need?
Australian applicants
Pathway 1
A degree from an Australian tertiary institution which gives eligibility for membership of the:
- Australian Community Workers Association;
- Australian Association of Social Workers;
- Australian Psychological Society; or
- Equivalent.
Pathway 2
A Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention AND:
- Vocational Graduate Certificate in Community Services Practice (Statutory Child Protection); OR
- Graduate Certificate in Safe Communities (Child Protection).

Stage 2: Apply
Apply to become a child protection practitioner through the Northern Territory Government jobs website and join a pool of candidates that Territory Families, Housing and Communities can access to find child protection practitioners suitable for our vacancies.

Stage 3: Assessment and selection
Once you have applied through the Northern Territory Government website, your application will be assessed by the recruitment team for further consideration.
Once assessed, successful applicants will be forwarded to a relevant selection panel for the final merit based selection process.
If you are unsuccessful at any stage you will promptly be notified.

The child protection practitioner (P1) generally has up to 3 years’ experience, child protection practitioner (P2) would have completed at least 3 to 5 years practical experience and the team leader or practice leader (P3) and senior practice leader (SP1) would have over 5 years with demonstrated leadership abilities in a multidisciplinary environment.

Applications are reviewed for further consideration by a selection panel in batches throughout the recruitment campaign. Applicants that apply under the special measures plan receive prior consideration and are assessed in line with a merit based selection process. From there non-special measures applicants are assessed and those shortlisted are given further consideration which includes two well-placed reference checks and a merit based selection process.

Applicants are requested to provide a brief cover letter outlining their experience and suitability to the role. This is supported by a comprehensive CV and copies of qualifications.

Relocation assistance can include costs associated with relocation of the employee and their family, such as airfares and / or fuel and accommodation expenses; removal costs for household goods and furniture, personal effects and vehicle within Australia; and / or payment of relocation allowance.
International candidates offered employment by the agency are eligible for consideration of relocation assistance from a point of entry into Australia.

Practitioners in regional and remote locations may be entitled to government employee housing, with the provision of a basic furniture package.

All new starters are invited to a 2-day corporate induction program followed by a comprehensive 3-week Care and Protection Induction Program.

There is a strong emphasis on developing our leaders from within the agency and the range of urban, regional and remote placements provide staff with professional experiences not available to practitioners in other states.
